The United States Department of Energy has mandated new & higher energy efficiency ratings on virtually all residential gas, electric, oil & tankless water heaters, completely altering the water heater landscape. These mandates will impact how water heaters are designed, manufactured, distributed and installed. For consumers - the size, especially the diameter of gas water heaters, will increase. This means a significant increase in price for those looking to replace their water heater next year. To accommodate the production of 2015 compliant products, Bradford White is currently in the midst of their largest plant expansion in company history which includes the installation of the most advanced manufacturing equipment. Due to the mandates, gas water heaters may require additional insulation and will be required to incorporate electronic ignition among other changes. This fall may be a good time to consider replacing before the mandate takes effect.
