The US Department of Energy has renewed the federal tax credit for the installation of qualifying HVAC equipment through December 31, 2016. The DOE has even gone so far as to make the credit - up to $500 - retroactive to January 1, 2015. Gas furnaces installed in 2015 or to be installed in 2016 that attain 95% AFUE or above qualify as do air conditioners & heat pumps that reach - for ACs - 16 SEER and 13 EER and - for heat pumps - 15 SEER, 8.5 HSPF & 12.5 EER. This is a limited lifetime benefit so if you have done any home improvements in the past (insulation, windows, etc) and used this tax credit you are not eligible. The breakdown is as follows: qualifying gas furnaces - $150; advanced circulating fans - $50; air conditioners & heat pumps - $300.
